An overview of health psychology

In some circles, there is a thought pattern that separates the mind from the body, psychology from medicine, the two parts of humanity become conflicted with one another, causing a heated debate as to which part should be more heavily paid attention to. However, in other circles, such as the one that I agree with those that focus on health psyhology, believe that both of these elements of health are more closely related than we could ever imagine.

Think of it this way, the mind and the body are both parts of overall health. Psychology plays a large in role in how we not only feel physical ailments, but also how we perceive them. Because of this, there is more to the argument than simply separating the two.

The overall takeaway

Is that health psychology is an important way to interpret the way in which we handle our physical and mental health. We must believe that there is little separation from the mind and the body, and that one directly affects the other. In order to understand how one works, we need to understand how the other works.

In realizing that the brain and the body are incredibly interconnected, we can begin to understand that nursing one, we can begin to help the other heal. This school of thought is an important way to drive innovation and begin to understand how humans work. Our emotional state affects how the body feels pain, and there is little debate that the mind and the body are different.

Peace through understanding

As humans, one of the toughest things to grapple with is why we are here and how we make the most of our time. If you boil it down to the basics, we have to accept the fact that we are part of something larger than ourselves, and learn how to serve the community as well as hang onto our sanity.

For many, this is through charity work, their job, meditation, their relationships with others, or something else. The fact is, we all have this duality, where we are ourselves, but we are also part of humanity. So how do we achieve the goal of inner peace, while also knowing that we live in a hectic world?

The answer

Is that there is no answer. There is no way that we can know for sure why we are here and what we should do during our short time on this earth. What we can do is paint a picture that allows us to understand that there are some things we can change, and others that we cannot.

By understanding that everyone is going through the same struggle, we can begin to better understand ourselves. We must realize that the bigger picture is what matters, humanity if you will. And that we are all playing our role as best we can. Once we can let go of our individual self and embrace humanity, we become closer to understanding just why we are here.

Getting the total picture of health

There is much more to being healthy than simply eating right, exercising, and avoiding free radicals. It takes a lifetime of thought, consideration, and dedication in order to achieve the highest level of personal health imaginable. Not to mention it takes a willingness to learn and check different sources (even aside from this one!) in order to find the right answers for each individual.

I have always been a healthy person, but it wasn’t until I visited the website that I understood that there are simply some things that we cannot do on our own. I said before that I was healthy and that’s true, but I also suffered a sports-related injury as a teenager which left me unable to do some of the things I was once able to do.

I just figured that this was something that I had to come to grips with, but I was wrong.

Injury is not the end

By visiting, I was able to learn how specialized lower back pain treatment could help me once again reach peak physical fitness. I had gone to a pain management specialist before, but they failed to pinpoint the source of my pain. The specialists at Total Health Ptc were able not only to identify the problem, but offer pain management that allowed me to act and feel ten years younger.

In addition, as I was helping my back recover, I noticed that my shoulder was also experiencing pain. I had been a baseball player in high school, but had never been hurt playing the sport, figuring that it would not have lasting effects on my body.

Although completely unrelated to my injury, simply by visiting, I learned that my actions decades ago lead to pain in my adult life. Even though I had no idea that the same company specialized in multiple pain areas, I was able to once again obtain information that allowed me to feel younger.

It’s easy to let pain inhibit you and dictate your level of activity and performance. However, know that there is something you can do to manage pain and once again become your old self physically.

Healthy living through awareness

Health is so much more than just exercise and eating right, it is the balance between mind and body and knowing how the world around us affects our health. Take for example the idea of free radicals. These are elements in the air that have negative health effects, and while some are unavoidable, others are not.

In order to maintain the vessel of our body, it is important to do our part to avoid free radicals, but how? Perhaps the most commonly accepted way to combat free radicals is through the use of antioxidants.

Antioxidants include various vitamins and minerals, all of which can be found in healthy foods.

Which foods contain antioxidants?

Many foods, often referred to as super foods contain high levels of antioxidants proven to help combat free radicals in the body. These include, but are not limited to blueberries, nuts, tea, dark grapes, and whole grains.

And while these foods will not completely eliminate free radicals in the body, they are useful for slowing the effects of aging that free radicals cause. It is estimated that just a single serving of any of these foods daily can reverse the aging process from free radicals significantly.

Of course, all of this should be coupled with a balanced diet and exercise, but this is one of the ways in which we can use knowledge of the world around us to help combat the negative effects of the world in which we live. The fight for health is not an easy one, but with knowledge comes power.

How much should you be running?

By now, we are all aware of the benefits of running. Allowing us the pathway to a healthier mind and body, running is a low-cost, low-energy form of exercise that anybody can find joy and comfort in. Studies have shown that people who run on a daily basis are happier, healthier, and outlive the average lifespan by upwards of 2 years.

And while there is no question of whether or not you should run, there is a question as to how much you should be running. The beauty of running is that, no pun intended, that it is a marathon rather than a sprint.

Running will not show results immediately, but they will be extraordinary.

The verdict

For beginners, experts state that a half mile is a good jumping off point, one half of that which should be spent running. In order to get the maximum effect out of cardiovascular exercise, one must work the heart to a larger degree than in everyday life.

A quarter mile run, which can occur at any point during the journey is what physicians estimate is the minimum time needed to be spent running in order to get the heart and lungs performing at full capacity.

The idea is to go up from there in quarter mile increments or until five miles is achieved. Of course, running for as long and as hard as your body will allow is the end goal, it is important to remember that moving up in increments is the best way to yield results and stay within your limitations.

The hardships of physical therapy

Anybody that has had a severe injury knows that the road to recovery is a long and arduous one. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about physical therapy is knowing that the body will never be the same. In health terms, bones, muscles, and joints will heal but something is lost in their overall integrity.

Physical therapy is often a process that leads to a number of emotionally draining effects. Simply not being able to do what you were once able can cause depression, which is why physical therapists understand that the process must be approached delicately.

Here we will attempt to help people through this difficult time with a few basic tips.

Always remember

That physical therapy is not a short process. Recovering from physical trauma is one of the most difficult things for the body to do, so understand that staying vigilant is of the utmost importance. One of the main concerns for those undertaking physical therapy is wondering whether or not they will actually recover. Understanding that the process should be taken one step at a time is the key to maintaining a positive attitude during the process.

Also remember that outlook is extremely important during this time. The worst thing one can do for recovery is become hopeless. The fact is that the body will recover, but it will take a great deal of work and dedication.

A good physical therapist will help you through every step of the process and understands that what you are feeling is perfectly natural. With the help of an experienced physical therapist and with the right outlook, you can once again become your old self.

Music therapy and its powerful message

Music therapy is a relatively new concept, sort of. While it has long been documented that music has therapeutic benefits, think of the phrase “music tames the wild beast”, it is only now being viewed through a more objective, medical lens. Music is the getaway for many individuals, and even those who aren’t music fans get away from it all while listening to a song from time time time.

Because of this, more institutions have poured money into research regarding the benefits of music therapy for a number of conditions. For instance, music has been proven to help children with autism and other developmental disorders.

When music therapy is played for autistic children, it has been shown that they do a better job of staying calm and collected. In short, music has been shown to be able to do what nothing else has.

In addition to the calming effect

Music and art in other forms have been proven to increase creativity and the development of motor skills. Connecting with the world around us through the use of our cognitive functions is regarded as one of the best ways to aid minds that are not developing “regularly” as the result of many disorders.

The hope is that music therapy will allow doctors and therapists to aid children with developmental disorders as well a adults with dementia and other mental ailment. More research needs to be done in order to gauge the long-term benefits of music therapy, but preliminary research shows that its benefits for mental disorders is second to none.

The importance of meditation

Meditation, the age old art of turning off one’s mind and just being. Long have the importance of meditation been documented throughout history, specifically in many Eastern religions, most notably Buddhism and Daoism.

Followers of Buddhism and Daoism will often go on long retreats, (we’re talking two weeks) where they do nothing but meditate the entire time, stopping only to eat and sleep, focusing primarily on disconnecting from the modern world.

Fortunately, you don’t need to go on a retreat in order to reap the health benefits of meditation.

Just breathe

Meditation can be as easy as turning off the television, closing your eyes, and breathing deeply. Doing this for as little as five minutes can help relieve stress, regulate heartbeat, lower blood pressure, and increase brain activity.

Studies have shown that daily meditation can lead to overall better health and may even prolong one’s life. Many health and wellness experts also insist that meditation is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle along with diet and exercise.

Still don’t believe me? Try it for one week, for only five minutes a day. I guarantee that not only will you feel better on a daily basis, but that you will soon be telling your friends the same thing I’m telling you. In a world with so many addictions, isn’t it time that you picked up a healthy one?

Whether your intentions are to get close to whatever God you believe in, or if you simply want to have a calmer life, meditation is the answer you’ve been looking for.

Stop smoking now

Let’s face it, this wouldn’t be a health and wellness blog unless we covered the issue of smoking. Affecting millions, perhaps billions of people across the world, smoking is one of the largest risks to health today.

Second-hand smoke aside, the effects of smoking, from the carcinogens to the downright poisons present in cigarettes is well documented. Even smokers know this, so why are so many people still doing it?

As someone that has quit, I can attest to the fact that it is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and it took every fiber of my being to do so.

The problem is

Not with people and their lack of will power. Although this does play a role, it is unfair to ask people to just “cowboy up” and quit smoking. The problem is more closely related to the price of quitting mechanisms.

Companies know that they have smokers right where they want them, and so they can essentially charge whatever they want for tools needed to quit. And while some of these are effective, others are not so much.

What needs to happen is for these products to become cheaper and more effective so that the price is so staggeringly low that smokers can’t even justify buying cigarettes. I mean, what is the point of paying the same price for inhalers, e-cigarettes, and other largely untested products that may not even work?

Make these cheaper, and you give smokers that want nothing more to quit a much more viable way of doing so.

The harm of Processed Foods

By now, it’s common knowledge to most people that processed foods are bad for both people and the environment. They are often presented with flashy packaging that takes up landfill space because it is not often recyclable.

But they sure are tasty aren’t they? One of the main reasons for this is they are often laden with chemicals that give them an addictive quality. Couple this with the fact that they often aren’t very filling, and you start to see the big picture.

So what should we do?

The easiest answer is to stop eating processed foods. And while it is a good and viable answer, of course it will not be an option for everyone. But what we can do, even if we still eat processed foods is look at the packaging that they come in.

Packaging is often a marketing tool used to sell more products. This is unavoidable, as everyone, even processed food companies are entitled to their ability to make money.

However, what we can do as consumers is look at the amount of packaging and make the right decision. Buy processed foods with less packaging, and preferably packaging that is recycled or biodegradable.

Is that it?

Of course not. There are a number of factors that go into living a healthy lifestyle for you and the planet. Looking at packaging and how much of it necessary is just one of the first steps in being a mindful consumer.

Of course, ideally, you will probably want to work on limiting your consumption of processed foods altogether.
